Why are some of us so compelled to write? Does anyone know? We string words together, arranging them just so. Spacing, positioning, assembling them in the right order to say what we need them to say and make readers feel what we want them to feel.
I completed six full length novels before my next one, number seven, was contracted and published. That’s a fifteen percent success rate going in. Then I did go back to rewrite one of the original six that eventually sold, and added four more new ones that were published as well. If I have you confused, I’m at six for eleven – I think. Just shy of a fifty-five percent success rate, as of now. My short story track record is a little better. In that genre, my success to failure ratio is about seventy-five percent. Same for human interest/personal essay articles submitted, three for four. That’s not counting the stories and essays that were accepted and paid for but never published.
